Better Marketing Is Done Intentionally & Not By Accident
If you want temporary success, go with your gut. If you want long-term growth and stability, learn from your successes and failures and build on them.
Most of the companies I worked for growing up and into my early 20s were small family owned businesses. They didn’t know each other, but they all treated their digital marketing about the same (even though they each had their own unique styles). They would sporadically decide to put effort into their digital marketing for a period of time and then forget it when something more important came along.
They would start making posts about a random topic, typically a special sale or holiday post. They would keep making posts for a couple weeks with the topics becoming more and more boring. From those times I learned a very important lesson:
If you want your marketing dollars to be investments and not expenses, you need to learn from your mistakes and your successes. How do you do that? Well, it doesn’t happen by accident. You have to be intentional, and a great way to start is by reviewing what you’ve done at the end of the year.
When you are beginning to review your marketing it can get confusing, which is why we do the following 7 things.
- Check the metrics (Yay numbers!)
- Check the results (Consultations, Personal Interactions, and Sales)
- Identify weak areas (Mistakes and failures)
- Be systematic
- Be thorough
- Keep your eye on the big picture (Your Marketing Ecosystem)
- Keep doing the things that worked
You can only make improvements when you know what worked and what didn’t. A simple review will help you set reasonable goals for the coming year and help you make a plan, so you aren’t relying on your gut. Wise investments in your marketing give great returns. Make sure to check out the checklist below to help you start your successful year-end review.
