3 Tips to Keep Your Marketing on Track
“If you don’t know who is doing what, neither will your team.”
The Big Picture
Once you start publishing your content, it’s easy to get overly focused on what’s right in front of you and forget the big picture. And when you are only looking at the road in front of you, you can find yourself off track very quickly.
Today, we would like to share with you three tips that we implemented into our team that enable us to make and publish content consistently. We know that most of these are geared towards teams, but they are also applicable to people who work solo. (You just have to remember which hat you are wearing at the time.) Here are our three tips on how to keep your marketing on track.
Know Who Is Responsible
When managing your team and the content you produce, the first thing you have to make clear is the exact roles that each team member will play. If you don’t know who is doing what, neither will your team. Many errors fall through the cracks because someone assumed that someone else was taking care of that. In our team, everyone knows what they are supposed to do and Preventing confusion by assigning roles will make the biggest difference in your ability to get your content out on time.
Equip Your Team
If your team is going to publish the content on time and execute their roles well, you will need to make sure they have all the tools they need to do their job properly. Your team should have the access to the accounts they need to use as well as the knowledge of how to use them. There have been times when we were already pushing a deadline and encountered problems where a team member didn’t have the right access to get the job done. That costs you in both time and energy as you have to scramble to get the job done.
It’s far easier to work ahead of time on equipping your team with everything they need to get the job done. If you don’t know whether they have all the tools they need, there is a simple way to find out. If you break the job down into a list of steps and make sure that they have what they need to complete each step. When we redesigned our processes we found areas where we needed to provide better access to members of our team and those changes helped us work more efficiently.
Review the Content Regularly
One of the biggest errors that companies make (even when they get to be the size of Coca Cola or Apple) is a failure to review their content from an objective viewpoint. When I talked about assuming that the job was done correctly, this is the step where those errors should be caught. Big companies that make headlines with their bad advertising usually didn’t have the right people in place to review the content of the marketing.
For our team, we meet once a week to review the marketing we have created for the following month. We look at how our audience will receive it, how it looks, and how it sounds before either approving it, or reworking it to make it right. (If you are working alone, you will need to get an outside opinion to prevent tunnel vision from affecting you.) Sometimes we even have to redo the work because it was not correct, but we are able to catch it ahead of time and ensure that we are proud of the work that leaves our office.
In Summary
Once you implement these three elements you can begin to execute the publishing of your marketing campaign with peace of mind. It’s not an easy to do a job the right way, but it is easier to do it right than it is to try and fix it after you’ve gone off track.
