Should You Invest Time or Money in Your Marketing?

by | theBlog

“…depending on your goals and resources you may have to choose one over the other.”

In a recent article, we discussed two approaches to marketing and briefly shared the basics of each approach. The first approach is time leveraged marketing and the second is money leveraged marketing. Both approaches are valid for different purposes and do work, but depending on your goals and resources you may have to choose one over the other. So today I want to share with you the essentials of the approaches in marketing and show you what they look like.

What does time leveraged marketing look like?

For time leveraged marketing, you will be using your time and energy to create what you need for your marketing. Basically, this is do-it-yourself marketing. It has a high participation requirement because if you don’t do it, it won’t get done. But if you have little to no budget, you may have to utilize this approach. It will take a lot of your time, not only in creating the content and implementing it, but also in learning what you need in order to create something that looks better than a 3rd graders art project. Macaroni art is great on your fridge, but not so great as an advertisement for your business. When you use this approach, you will have to spend hours planning and structuring your marketing to work. You will have to figure out what everything is supposed to look and sound like and then create a schedule to follow in creating the content. Then you will have to set about creating the content. If you don’t know how to use graphics programs you will have to learn so you can edit the images. And once you’ve completed the content, knowing how and when to use it requires knowledge you will have to go out of your way to get. This approach will eat into the time and energy you normally use to do your work in your business. But if you are starting out or are strapped for cash, this may be your only option.

What does money leveraged marketing look like?

For money leveraged marketing, you buy the expertise and services of others to create and manage your marketing. This takes a lot of the effort and stress out of marketing. You don’t have to create the content, or worry about it getting posted on time. All you have to do is follow up on the leads generated from the marketing (and pay the bills for having it done for you.) You’re still involved in the process, but only as the person who reviews and asks for changes before it is implemented. You depend on the experts rather than doing it yourself, but the quality of what they create is greater than what you could do with your time or skill level. When you use this approach, you will spend a few hours discussing your needs and goals with your marketing team. You will communicate to them everything about the colors and style you want, and then you unleash them on the project. They will present you with a schedule of content, and the content itself for review and approval. And all you have to do is say yes. They manage the publication and responses to the content and only forward relevant content to you for review. Overall, this approach removes the stress, and effort involved in marketing, but it comes at a higher price.

Making the Decision

Choosing between the two comes down to the resources you have available to you and the amount of time you want to spend working on your marketing. So you may be stuck at the time leveraged marketing if you don’t have a steady income stream to support paying for money leveraged marketing.
